Makeup through the eras (1920s - 2010s)
Take a look at how beauty has transformed from the 1920s to the 2010s. As we take a walk down the memory lane, let's recap if we've embraced these beauty trends or perhaps, seeing our moms pulling off the look!
“Pass me the kohl eyeliner and the red lipstick!”
It was the time when the makeup industry started booming and cosmetic companies like Max Factor and Maybelline flourished. Beauty looks in this era anchored on a poutier look where women would draw their lips to accentuate the cupid bows and wear their lipsticks in shades of red or plum purple. Pale skin created by light powders and eyeshadow was shaped triangular were also the iconic looks created.
“Maybe wing eyeliner and natural brows could look good”
Moving away from the pale-looking skin look, foundation started matching women’s actual skin color was preferred in this era. Eyebrows were drawn in a more natural way and filled in with eyeshadow. Eyes became the center of attention where most women favored the winged eye look. Contouring technique was created and became a well-liked trend in this era. To top off the 1940s look, red lipstick was a hot favorite and it was drawn slightly above the natural lipline to give the appearance of a fuller lips.
“More lashes, we need more lashes!”
The focus went from the lips to the eyes, especially with dramatic top and bottom lashes and a cut-crease style eyeshadow. The beauty icon at the time, was no other than Twiggy who brought the craze on dramatic lashes to create larger looking eyes. False eyelashes took on a whole new popularity by placing on both top and bottom for a real retro ‘flapper’ effect. Eyeliner was also one of the important tools in order to accentuate the eyes. Instead of the cat eye effect, liner was doubled up on the end of the lid and white-line were drawn down over the upper lid to inner corner of the eye.
“More everything, we need more everything!”
The 1980s look was all about creating a distinct and powerful look. It was all about exaggerated the look with big hair, bright colors on the eyes and lips and also a whole lot of blush that gave everyone insane cheekbones! Bright pink, bronze, coral or red blush were applied without blending out the edges. Color clash eye makeup using pigmented colors like fuchsia, electric blue, purple and green were used to bring out the 80s look. Who led the beauty wave in this era? Of course it’s our rolling stone queen, Madonna.
“Ok, maybe we toned it down too much. Gimme some glitter, stat!”
Hurray, we are coming closer to the era where most of us are most familiar with. The beauty looks in this era focused on the glitz and shine on the face. Glitter and shimmer was the iconic beauty trend to master the 2000s look. Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Rihanna rocked their beauty looks with shiny, frosted lip gloss, shimmery eyes, chunky highlights, blue or purple eyeshadow in contrast with a fake tan.
“Everything from new to comeback trends”
Here comes the era of contouring brought alive by Kim Kardashian. Her flawless and defined features were enhanced by contouring which was then loved and followed by many. Nonetheless, the 2010s is the era of volatile beauty where we see rapid changes of beauty trends from comeback trends to the innovation of new trends.
